Context & memories
The context ring
The small ring next to the composer shows how full the model's context window is, split into segments:
| Segment | What it holds |
|---|---|
| System | Ingot's instructions and the active mode |
| Rules | AGENTS.md and matching rules |
| Files | chips, @ mentions and files the agent read |
| Memories | remembered facts injected into this chat |
| Conversation | the messages so far |
Hover the ring for exact numbers. When the window is about 80% full, Ingot offers Summarize & continue: the conversation is condensed into a summary so you can keep working without losing the thread.
Memories
Memories are short facts and preferences an agent keeps between chats, such as "use pnpm in this repo" or "prefer named exports".
- When the model learns something worth keeping, it writes a
REMEMBER:line and Ingot saves it. - Up to 6 relevant memories are injected into each new chat.
- See, edit and delete memories, and turn automatic memories on or off (on by default), in Settings › Tools › Memories.
Where memories live
| Scope | Folder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Project | .ingot/memories/ | ignored by Git automatically (the folder carries its own .gitignore) |
| Global | ~/.ingot/memories/ | shared by all projects |
Each memory is a plain Markdown file, so you can edit it in the IDE like any other file.
Rules are for instructions you write on purpose; memories are for small things the agent picks up along the way. See Rules.
